Shetland Sheepdog: temperament, care and health
A guide to the Shetland Sheepdog: everyday life, care needs, health screening and preparing to welcome a puppy.

Life with a Shetland Sheepdog
Elegant, attentive and responsive, the Shetland Sheepdog enjoys shared activity and learning. This sensitive breed benefits from a predictable environment and respectful early socialisation.
Allow time for walks, mental activity and regular coat brushing. Introduce people, sounds and new environments in manageable steps. Reward calm behaviour and build confidence without forcing contact.
Understand the parents' health records
Ask about eye examinations, CEA and PRA results, MDR1 status, DM, relevant coagulation tests and hip assessments. Give the veterinarian the actual MDR1 result before treatment.
Check the examination date, age of the dog and exact scope of each result. No test or breeding home can guarantee lifelong freedom from illness.
Choosing a breeding home
Look for clear information about the parents, everyday puppy care and continued support. Discuss your lifestyle before reserving. Ask to understand the records rather than relying on a badge or title.
